How to tell your clutch is on the way out
- The engine revs climb but the car does not pull, usually worst in third, fourth or going uphill
- The biting point has crept right to the top of the pedal travel
- A burning smell after a hill or after heavy traffic
- Juddering as you pull away from a standstill
- The pedal feels spongy, or sticks to the floor and does not come back
- Crunching, or refusing to go into gear, especially first and reverse
Some of that is the clutch itself. Some of it is the cable, the hydraulics, the release bearing or the master and slave cylinder, which cost a lot less to put right. That is exactly why we look before we quote.
What happens when you bring it in
1. We drive it, then we lift it
On the road first, then on one of our six ramps, so we can separate a worn clutch from a hydraulic fault.
2. You get a video
Whatever we find, we film it on your car and send it to your phone. You are not taking our word for it.
3. You get a written price
Parts and labour, in writing, before anything comes apart. WhatsApp us the registration and we can usually give you a range before you even come in.
4. You decide
If you want to go away and think about it, go and think about it. Nothing is touched until you say yes.
What a clutch replacement actually involves
On most front wheel drive cars the gearbox has to come away from the engine to reach the clutch. That is why labour is the bigger half of the bill, and why it is worth doing the whole kit while it is apart rather than going back in six months. A standard kit is the clutch plate, the pressure plate and the release bearing. We will tell you which parts your car needs and why.
Clutch work is not same day work. We will give you a realistic day and time when we quote, and we will tell you straight away if it changes.

Questions we get asked
Can I keep driving on a slipping clutch?
You can, right up until you cannot. The risk is that it lets go somewhere inconvenient, and if it burns out badly it can take the flywheel with it, which makes the job dearer. If it is slipping, get it looked at.
How long will you have my car?
Longer than a service. We will give you a realistic time when we quote, rather than a number that sounds good on a web page.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. 12 months or 12,000 miles on parts and labour, whichever comes first.
Do you work on my make?
All makes. We are specialists in BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen, and we can update the online service record for Mercedes, BMW and Audi.
Can I pay when I collect?
Yes. No prepay and no card held. You pay when you pick the car up.
